I had a shoot for a high school senior out at a horse farm the other night. OMG, can I get more of these please? Horse farms are the BEST! And? This stable owner also breeds Australian Shepherds and has donkeys and barn cats and it was, frankly, like wonderland. It was a gorgeous night, right before sunset, and it was a wonderful place to step into after weeks in the city. Here are a few outtakes from my evening out there. Enjoy!
Baby horses can come out with curly tails!? Who knew?!
And just like Magda's, I love it when the fur swirls. Adorable. For your internet shares of the day:+ These chocolate hazelnut treats look like a pain to make, but on the other hand COMPLETELY DELICIOUS, so maybe I'll try it around the holidays.+ A fascinating read about Monica Lewinsky and how she was affected (and recovered) from 1998.+ I super loved this piece on 22 things every woman needs.+ And from that list, I found this. Which I really want. And, you know, my birthday is in less than two weeks... (hint! hint!)
This week I had a meeting at 7:30 am (see? I rise super early for more than just sunrise photo shoots...), and we decided to try out the new Spyhouse in the North Loop. I truly love the decor of this place, and I could work here for hours. But it's also a great spot to go over details of the weekend's wedding with a new second shooter. The only piece of this place that clearly does not fit is that menu board by the cash register with all the neon writing. White chalk on a blackboard would be much more on brand. But seriously, that's a pretty small nitpick. For your internet shares of the day:+ I have been listening to this Beck song a LOT on repeat. I want a full album like this, please.+ This essay about the gorilla and the parents and the kid and, you know, things called accidents really got me thinking. The author talks about how the internet likes to blame everyone when they don't know the facts, but I surmise this whole phenomena originated with the 24-hour-news-cycle (which I believe is the heart of most things evil).+ And on a more uplifting note, Trader Joe's employees list out their favorite frozen meals. As someone who literally threw a Trader Joe's party when the first one opened in Minneapolis, this excites me.
The weather this past weekend was a bit nuts. It would rain one minute and then the sun would be pouring in the next minute and then it would rain while the sun was still out! I had a shoot that evening, but I didn't offer to cancel or postpone because I felt like we would get enough dry time with as weird as the weather was being. And I was right! While it wasn't *sunny,* it didn't rain the entire shoot and the clouds were fantastic. I snapped this image on the way back to the car because I love the slope of the hill and how green and lush Minnesota is right now. And it smelled delicious! And here are my internet shares to entertain you:+ Would you let your 3 year old go on a weekend getaway without you? I'm actually charmed by this.+ I am totally making/inhaling this for breakfast.+ These photographs of our president are just phenomenal.+ Did you know you can rent Julia Child's french cottage?
I had a family shoot over in St. Paul on Thursday night, and I snapped this image of the water falls near Como before I plopped the family in for their images. It was such a gorgeous night, and there was a jazz band playing in the pavilion and there were food and drinks and a lake and wildlife and... yeah. I just loved it. And it wasn't even crowded!Anyway, I took Friday off from work and played hooky with Ezra all day today. And I left my camera at home (blasphemy!). But seriously, I'm busy enough being one-on-one with the kid that I don't have time/energy to take photos. I'm sure I'll get there eventually, just not yet. Today, we had donuts (National Donut Day!) and we went to a toddler yoga class and we bought groceries and napped and played and went for a long walk. It was wonderful, and I'm so happy that I have a flexible schedule so that I can enjoy these days with him.For your internet share of the day, I know I have linked to many articles by/about the lovely Nora, but I just finished her book (and really loved it). If you are looking for something to read this summer on a flight or something that's easy and quick, I really suggest it. Also? I loved this essay she wrote for Slate.Have a great weekend everyone!
I'm not one for flowers (sorry!), but spring always makes me appreciate the grasses and variety of greens that one can plant in a Minnesotan garden. Ironic, then, that I made this photo black and white, eh? I couldn't help it. I loved the texture. If you close your eyes and clear your mind, then look again, it almost looks like hair on a Pixar character. I love seeing new things in photos. To see some of my favorite kinds of gardens, you can check out my pinterest boards devoted to summer yards and patios. And for your internet shares of the day, I could lose hours and hours into this Netflix rabbit hole.
I loved this image because when I look at it, I can smell summer and I can hear the bugs and I can feel the damp air. I snapped this between portraits last weekend as I was tromping around the tracks with a lovely pregnant mother, her husband and her 3-year-old boy.Summer evenings for me have meant a lot of cooking dinners, feeding the family, bathing and getting the kid into bed, then grabbing my camera gear and meeting clients in spots like this one. I love that I have daylight until 9 pm right now, I'm not gonna lie.Another thing I'm doing a lot of these days is trying to think of presents for graduation gifts. Because of that, I'm including a few ideas in the internet shares today. Happy Wednesday!+ I don't have a microwave, but if I ever get one I want one of these.+ An uncle of mine got me this for my own high school graduation, and I still use it all the time. One of the most useful gifts I got, hands down.+ This would have come in very handy when I lived in the dorm.+ This is not a graduation gift. This is an... "anniversary gift" that I hope to receive some day? Hahahaha. A girl can dream.
I was on a shoot last weekend with some new clients (who were fantastic, by the way), when we spotted this crane in the lake. Beautiful, right? And then about five minutes later my camera broke. Not like, "Let's fix it!" broke. Like, "Oh shit, I wore this thing out!" broke. A Nikon is supposed to be good for 150,000 "actuations" (clicks). This camera had 400,000 actuations. So I knew this was coming... but... it was still a little sad. Should I have a funeral? Bronze the thing? Not sure. We'll see...Then on Monday and Tuesday we were sleeping with the windows open and were woken up at 4 am both mornings by some noise. It sounded like a bird in the room, but after listening closer, it sounded more like birds hanging onto the outside of our window screens. I checked both times and saw nothing. I joked that the bats must be returning to the nest. Bad joke.Because last night I was taking Magda for a walk around dusk, and I looked up as we left the house and saw six bats fly from the roof right next to our bedroom window. Yes. That is some creepy stuff right there. But not quite as scary as the cost to relocate the bat colony: $2K. Awesome. And after we got off the phone with the bat exterminator (thanks for answering at 9 pm, by the way!), we were closing the windows to the house and stepped in cold dog vomit and diarrhea. We had been watching the best television ever in the basement when Magda got sick, and so we had been unaware. And then she was up at all hours of the night, still sick.Let's all hope for a better time this weekend, shall we?In the meantime, here are some internet shares for you:+ Waffle croissants? Yes. Let's do this tomorrow.+ A place to store my records and my wine? Ok. (It's for whisky. I prefer vino.)+ And did you year about how Minneapolis has the best park system in the country? Well of course it does.
I want to learn to play the piano. I've wanted to for a very long time, but we didn't have a piano in the house until I was a teenager, and it was always out of tune so I never gave it a shot. But now I really want to learn, and so does Jamie. And we have a spot in the house just waiting for one.So I just started looking on Craig's List at the free ones, and a good friend told me about some at her church. I swung by there today to check them out, and I'm not gonna lie, it's pretty exciting to think about.Pianos and film! All kinds of new hobbies breaking in this year, eh?For your internet share of the day, this map showing how people commute was darn fascinating. And I liked this essay about how we ladies tend to apologize too much. Sorry! Not Sorry! And you know I can't skip showing you winning photos from a NatGeo contest! That 13th photo? SCARY. AS. HELL.
